About the Program:
Montessori House of children of Austin is one of Austin’s oldest continually-operating Montessori Schools. We moved to our current location in 1985. In those days Ginger (our current director) was the lead guide in the 3-6 year old class, and her son Josh was getting ready to graduate from MHOC to Austin Montessori, where his brother Zack had been attending school for a couple of years. Austin was a easy-going college town, and only a very few, extremely technological people had a personal computer. Life was very different then than it is now, but one thing that remains the same is the incredible potential of the youngest generation. As Dr. Maria Montessori said it, “The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.“ This is the basic energizing force behind our school.
Since she became Director in 1989, Ginger has dedicated herself to creating a safe, organized and engaging learning environment in our school. She believes that a calm, confident and secure emotional state is fundamental to a student’s ability to learn. Therefore it is necessary to educate students on how to achieve this state for themselves and for the rest of the class. This means that personal emotional awareness and conflict resolution are important skills. They are as important as phonetics and number sense in building a successful academic career. It is from this philosophy of equal importance of emotional and academic education that we derive our motto, “education for the whole child.”
Ginger has followed this motto ever since. She has maintained a stillness in our school against and ever-increasing pace of life. She has also kept a traditional Montessori approach, requiring her students to be responsible for themselves, their education and their property. Ginger has successfully led our school for over 25 years. During that time, Zack and Josh both worked as guides at the school on and off since they had been of age. After Josh finished college, he began working at the school again as the lead guide in 2005. Three years later he became our Assistant Director. 2010 saw the addition of Heather Wright to our staff. Heather became the lead toddler guide.
2013 saw the departure of Josh from the staff. He was offered an opportunity to pursue a new career and he decided to make the change. This year also saw a growth in enrollment and the addition of a few more staff members. AnDrea Abraham and Samantha Stuter joined us and the new larger classes soon found their rhythm.
In the tradition of “education for the whole child,” we offer a couple of classes to enrich the education of our students. We are privileged and honored to have Brannen Temple teaching our drumming class, and our own Heather Wright teaching Art Class. There is no additional cost for any of these classes, and they are offered to all students.
