About the Program:
While the first Montessori children’s House opened over 100 years ago, the movement is far from antiquated and continues to gain in influence and popularity today. This is due to the great vision and dedication of our foundress, Dr. Maria Montessori. Her findings, based on experimentation and observation alone, have been confirmed over and over again as medical study of the brain has progressed.
Today it is often noted that very young children are like “little sponges”. This phenomenon, found up to the age of six, was first described by Dr. Montessori, who called it “The Absorbent Mind”. She noted that, in an almost effortless manner, the young child absorbs the language, customs and way of life found in his or her own home and culture. Indeed, it is in the first six years of life that habits such as initiative, patience and responsibility; controlled use of the hand and body; and unique aspects of the child’s personality are developed. It is no exaggeration to say that once a child enters the first grade, the die has largely been cast!
At Montessori School of The Epiphany, we believe that this power of the Absorbent Mind places great responsibility on everyone who has contact with the very young. We take seriously our own role in “the village” where parents are raising young children today.
