About the Program:
Peabody Terrace Children's Center (PTCC) is a Harvard affiliated non-profit child care center providing care for University affiliated families and the surrounding community. The Center serves children between 3 months and 5 years of age. There are 8 classrooms in total: 2 Infant classrooms, 4 Toddler classrooms, 2 Preschool classrooms, and an Art Studio. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia early childhood education philosophy which honors the child as protagonist, teacher as researcher, and parents as the first teacher. Together, we are a strong, dedicated community. We are proud of the partnerships we have with families and we are always grateful for what each child teaches us through their learning. Peabody Terrace Children's Center is committed to providing high quality individualized child care to an internationally diverse group. Our community of staff, teachers and families is inspired by the municipal infant/toddler centers and preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Fifty years ago, families and teachers in Reggio Emilia built a school to support families who needed to work, and to give children a social context for their learning and exploration. Over 10 years ago, the PTCC community began studying this approach and adapting it for our local context. Like the schools in Reggio Emilia, our pedagogy respects even the youngest children as protagonists and active participants in their own lives and educations. Teachers are collaborators and co-constructors of learning with children. They observe children’s work, discuss with colleagues and families, and then offer children materials, ideas and experiences that extend their learning. Children are invited to delve into their work for long periods, and to think in many different “languages” so that they can see their ideas from a variety of perspectives. We put relationships with people, environments, ideas and materials at the center of our work together. Our environments engage children, welcome them and their families, and tell the stories of our lives together.
