About the Program:
The University-Ravenna Cooperative Preschool offers a play-based preschool education for children ranging in age from two to five years old. Class is held in the spacious, bright basement of the Ravenna Collaboratory (unaffiliated), which is conveniently located a few blocks off of Northeast 65th Street and 35th Avenue Northeast, just across the street from Bryant Elementary. One open floor plan classroom contains all of our learning centers — including a home center, dramatic play center, art center, library, sensory table, large muscle equipment, and more — facilitating easy movement between centers during free play time. We use the playground at Bryant Elementary School (unaffiliated) for outdoor recess. We have an amazing set of teachers that use their drama and music backgrounds to create a rich classroom experience for the children. We also use the Second Step Early Learning curriculum to support their social-emotional learning. Our preschool is part of the North Seattle College Cooperative Preschool Program and is run entirely by the parents of the students enrolled in the preschool. Though co-op preschools require more parental involvement than traditional preschools and daycares, they also have many benefits. First, the monthly tuition is substantially lower than traditional preschools and daycares. Costs can be kept down because parents hold volunteer administration jobs to keep the preschool running smoothly behind the scenes. Second, the student-to-adult ratio is much lower than traditional preschools and daycares because parents and other caregivers assist the teacher in the classroom. Third, parental involvement in the preschool means parents play a large role in defining their child’s first school experience.
