About the Program:
With extraordinary views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, hidden beaches full of tide pools & treasures, and a garden of giant sculptures to explore, SAM’s Olympic Sculpture Park is an ideal location for learning through play, art, and adventure. Daily your little Picasso will explore, craft, and create. They will draw inspiration from the majestic landscape, and learn to celebrate the blend of human creativity and natural wonder that makes this park such a special place.
Throughout all of these adventures your preschooler will engage with symbols, letters, and ideas and conduct their own experiments – testing the logic and possibilities of the natural world. Kindergarten readiness skills are woven into your child’s play through the use of the evidence based HighScope curriculum. With an attentive adult close at hand, you child will engage with books, hear stories, and play with letters and language to make words and form ideas. They will play with quantities and numbers, and learn the relationship between symbols and ideas. And in a tide pool laboratory they will develop curiosity, creativity, and grit through hands on science and play in the great outdoors. As a partnership with Seattle Art Museum, this location has a strong focus on art and play based education. Being located in a museum, this classroom will make a special effort to minimize the impact of our children’s play and learning on the landscape and other guests. To do so this classroom is mobile, with learning stations that will rotate throughout the park, including field trips to Myrtle Edwards Park and the Seattle Waterfront. The pickup and drop off location remains the same daily.
This classroom includes a private portable bathroom equipped for child use and access to sheltered play space in case of severe weather or emergency (in SAM’s Neukom Vivarium). The school year is from September to June – school is closed in the summer to make room for all of the community events and summer camps who call the sculpture park home.
Please note as a downtown Seattle location parking is limited. For picking up and dropping off your child we highly recommend taking the bus, walking, or riding a bicycle (possibly on the lovely Elliot Bay trail that passes through the park). There is no on-site parking available for pick up and drop off. Street parking is available nearby.
Toilet Independence Requirements:
Must be able to use the porta potty.
